Blount County Memorial Museum & Genealogy Research Center, located in Oneonta opened to the public in 1970. Today, the museum stands proudly to display the united efforts of those individuals and organizations who chose to honor Blount county's war veterans and to appreciate the heritage of the past and the need to preserve it. Its archives include more than 500 research volumes and over 1,000 files on Blount County families. The museum has nine displays that are provided by local Blount County residents. All displays are changed quarterly. Museum hours are Tuesday through Thursday 8:00am to 5:00pm. Blount County was named for Tennessee Governor W. G. Blount who sent militia under Andrew Jackson to defend the settlers in Alabama during the Creek War of 1813-1814. Some of Jackson's men were among the first settlers in Blount County.
